US government will now test AI models before public release — what this means

The US Center for AI Standards and Innovation announced agreements with Google DeepMind, Microsoft, and xAI to evaluate AI models before public release. This is the most concrete step toward AI regulation in 2026.

What’s happening

  • • Pre-release safety evaluation by government
  • • Google, Microsoft, xAI signed voluntarily
  • • Focus on dual-use capabilities and safety benchmarks
  • • OpenAI and Anthropic expected to follow

Impact on API platforms

Regulated AI means regulated API access. Platforms that can demonstrate audit trails (who called what, when, why) will have an advantage. apitree logs every agent interaction in agent_interactions with full input/output tracking — exactly what compliance teams need.

The Authority Harness (L1-L4 permission levels) in apitree was designed for this: pricing changes require CEO approval, architecture changes require CTO approval. Compliance-ready from day one.
